Heart Healthy Lesson (04-19-2016)

Hello Everyone,

For the month of April, we engaged in Heart Healthy activities to get the children motivated to engage in more physical activities and to learn to measure their pulse. We ended the lesson with a heart healthy snack called banana sushi.

Vegetable Soup Lesson (01-26-2016)

Hello Everyone,

During the chilly month of January, we decided to kick things back with a warm and delicious vegetable soup. We were able to teach the children the importance of not only learning how to cook, but cooking healthy. We selected two of the older kids in the group to assist in cooking the soup. Here is what one of the volunteers had to say about her experience:

“My time at Operation Sunshine was a learning experience because I was able to see firsthand how kids react to learning about different types of ingredients to make one meal. It was nice to see the girls get excited about what all they can put in the soup. I really liked how the girls were able to put the ingredients/vegetables in the soup themselves so they could have a firsthand experience on “cooking”.

The activity for the entire group of girls was a good one but I think a more hands-on activity would be more beneficial than paper and pencil/crayon. Some hands-on activities include an actual bowl with plastic toy vegetables for each child, or magnetic vegetables for a white board and each child could have a chance at putting what vegetables they want in the drawn bowl. I think a more hands-on activity would bring the kids to a better understanding of what they can include in their meal than just drawing what they want to include.

Overall, my time volunteering was beneficial for me because I enjoy working in the community and with kids. I will definitely sign up for more Nutrition Outreach shifts and hope to make an impact in a child’s life.”

Smoothie Lesson (04-05-2016)

Hello Everyone,

One of the lessons that we did for the month of April was entitled, CalciYUM. Here is what one of our volunteers had to say about her experience:

“The Campus Kitchen Nutrition Outreach program visited Operation Sunshine to teach about Calcium on April 5th. The girls were attentive and willing to participate in the activities provided, such as Bingo and making fruit smoothies. Briana Fields, the coordinator for the Nutrition Outreach program, was flexible to each girls needs and was considerate of their requests. Although the lesson was a bit rushed due to time constraints, the girls seemed to enjoy every moment of it. Nutrition Outreach lessons at Operation Sunshine prosper due to the charismatic energy the volunteers and children have towards each other.”

Orange you glad to see us?

Hello blogging world!

We are Campus Kitchen Nutrition Outreach and we’re here to tell stories, post pictures, and share experiences with you. As you can see, we’ve been busy this year getting our organization started! Last summer, with the help of our Ameriprise Fellow Briana Fields, we were able to teach weekly lessons at both of our community partners, Operation Sunshine and Little Willie Center. During the school year, we were able to facilitate a four lessons per month, two at Operation Sunshine and two at Little Willie Center. We couldn’t have done any of these lessons without our amazing shift leaders and active volunteers that have jumped on board and done some amazing work this year.

Stay tuned for their stories as we wrap up the semester and warm up into summer with our new Ameriprise Fellow, Lekisha Pittman, and plenty of cool treats to show off.
