Hello Everyone,
During the chilly month of January, we decided to kick things back with a warm and delicious vegetable soup. We were able to teach the children the importance of not only learning how to cook, but cooking healthy. We selected two of the older kids in the group to assist in cooking the soup. Here is what one of the volunteers had to say about her experience:
“My time at Operation Sunshine was a learning experience because I was able to see firsthand how kids react to learning about different types of ingredients to make one meal. It was nice to see the girls get excited about what all they can put in the soup. I really liked how the girls were able to put the ingredients/vegetables in the soup themselves so they could have a firsthand experience on “cooking”.
The activity for the entire group of girls was a good one but I think a more hands-on activity would be more beneficial than paper and pencil/crayon. Some hands-on activities include an actual bowl with plastic toy vegetables for each child, or magnetic vegetables for a white board and each child could have a chance at putting what vegetables they want in the drawn bowl. I think a more hands-on activity would bring the kids to a better understanding of what they can include in their meal than just drawing what they want to include.
Overall, my time volunteering was beneficial for me because I enjoy working in the community and with kids. I will definitely sign up for more Nutrition Outreach shifts and hope to make an impact in a child’s life.”
